Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and also known as “city of love” which is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of 1400 feet above the sea level. Geographically, Dehradun is situated between the shivalik hills and the Central Himalayan hills.

Dehradun is the famous hill tourist destination of India. It extends from the east to Ganga River and west to the Yamuna River. These two rivers are the biggest river of India. Although tourist keep coming to visit Dehradun throughout the year but I believe that end of December to beginning of January is the best time to visit Dehradun because Mussoorie,  located near Dehradun, receive snowfall at this time which you will get to see.


How to Reach Dehradun

By Road – Dehradun is very well connected to rest of India through network of Roads. From Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh you can reach Dehradun by state transport buses which are directly available and also you can reach Dehradun by your own vehicles or hired taxis.  

By Train – The nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway Station and many trains connect to Dehradun from various cities of India.

By Air – The nearest airport for Dehradun is Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun 29 km.


Places to visit in Dehradun


Lachhiwala is already recognized as a major picnic spot in Dehradun, but now it has been developed as a nature park. People are also taking the message of conservation of nature and their cultural heritage from this nature park.  

Lachhiwala Nature Park is situated about 3 km from Doiwala and 20 km from Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand. This park is located in the middle of the forest, due to which the atmosphere here remains absolutely calm. So if you are looking for some peaceful place, then this park is best for you.

Lachhiwala is a man-made water pools where visitors like to enjoy bath with fun and entertainment. A steam of Song River is collected in several pools.  On visiting to this park, you will to see lush green trees and plants, swimming pool, boating activity and cafeteria on both sides of the road. Apart from this, more than two lakh people come to visit Lachhiwala in each year but during the peak season April to June, exceed 5 thousand people’s crowd gathers in one day.

Timing of the park: The timing of this park varies according to the season. The park opens at 9:00 am in winter season and closes at 5:00 pm. In summer Season park opens at 8:00 am and closes at 5:00 pm.  



Sahastradhara which means “Thousand-fold spring”.  It is situated about 14 km from Dehradun city at Baldi River. Sahastradhara is noted for its natural beauty and popular for picnic spot. Many people come to Sahastradhara to see the beauty of waterfalls and caves.

Sahastradhara is a picnic spot but the main attraction here is the caves in which water keeps flowing continuously. This water is sulfur-rich which contain medicinal stuff and skin cure ailments. The water falling from the hill has been stored in a natural way. Walking a little further on the hill, there are many small caves naturally carved inside the hill, which are not clearly visible from outside but when entering these caves,their roof drips continuously like showers of light rain. Several groups of streams located here are known as Sahastradhara. Thousands of people come here every year to escape the summer heat.


Robber's Cave (Guchhu pani)

Robber’s Cave locally called as “Guchhu Pani.” It is situated about 8 km from Dehradun City which is formed in Himalaya.  Robber’s Cave is believed to be abode of Lord Shiva and it is placed very near to Sahastradhara which means ‘Thousand fold springs’ in Dehradun. It is special because this river water flows out from middle of the Cave. The cave is narrow gorge carved out of a conglomerate limestone formation. It feels similar to being in a scene from a mystery movie which is surrounded by dark limestone as streams gushed inside the cave.

Robber’s Cave is 600 meter long cave full of natural beauty. There is 10 meter highest waterfall where children or elder both can bath with full joy. You can capture photos with your family members or loved one at different places to share these photos on social media.

Here the cave remains very cool in summer because the water of this cave is full of underground springs. This is a best picnic spot for you to see the natural beauty of Dehradun and you must visit it once.



Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most visited temples in this region and it is popular destinations in Dehradun where the young travellers love to travel here as a picnic spot. Travelers take a short trekking distance through the forest to come here.

Tapkeshwar temple is also called as the Tepkeshwar Mahadev Temple. This temple is famed as holy temple which is built on the banks of the Asan River, located at a distance of 6.5 km away from Dehradun city. Tapkeshwar has an oldest Shivling in the cave. On this shivling, water keeps dripping non-stop from the rock which provides amazing view to watch. That’s why it was named as Tapkeshwar. In Tapkeshwar, Shivling it is enshrined in the main temple which is devoted to Lord shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva fulfills all the wishes of all his devotees. Before entering to the main temple the pilgrims take a bath in the Asan River and offer obeisance to the Shiva idol.

Apart from this, a large number of people attend the fair which is organized on the occasion of Shivratri and people offer their prayers to the deity with great excitement.


Forest Research Institute (FRI)

Forest Research Institute is popularly known as FRI. FRI is the oldest and largest forest based training institute of India, located in Dehradun sate of Uttarakhand. This institute is established in 1906 as Imperial Forest Research Institute which is spread over 4.5 square km.  Forest Research Institute is affiliated to the University and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the year 1991.

FRI is not only known for its research work but also for its amazing architecture. Due to its attractive design “FRI” became a famous tourist place of Dehradun.

There is a lot of eagerness inside the people to go to FRI. Here the open green grassy grounds, architecture, museum impress people a lot, that’s why people keep coming here again and again.

Apart from this, there are six museums in the premises of Institute which has vast collection of forestry related items. It is open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.  FRI has been the location of several songs, videos and Bollywood films such as Student of the Year, Krishna cottage, etc. And canteen facilities are also available in the FRI premises for the convenience of passengers.


Paltan Bazar

Paltan Bazaar is situated in the heart of Dehradun, which spread over a distance of 1.5 km between clock tower and the Railway station. It is extremely famous in Dehradun which is known as everyone’s favorite place for shopping.  In this market of Dehradun, you will get to see latest and trendy things from clothes to shoes. The price of all the things present here is very less than the rest of the markets.  That’s why it is also known as the cheapest market of Dehradun. Many small markets are also present in the market like Rama market, Fish market, Dhula Bazaar, etc. In this busy market has it all like local spices, street food, confectionery items and household goods. Apart from this, you can buy traditional handicrafts and artifacts as well as jewelry, bangles and many more. Hence, it is considered as the main market of Dehradun.  


Malsi Deer Park

Malsi Deer Park is situated at a distance of about 10 km from Dehradun city at the foothills of the shivalik range. Malsi Deer Park has been renamed as “Dehradun Zoo”. It is a beautiful tourist spot which has been developed as a mini zoological park.  

The park is heaven for nature lovers and the beauty of the park is highlighted by the rich flora and fauna. The park is a best point to relax and take a break from the busy city life. It is a small zoological park with a picturesque location and different species of wildlife which makes it a wonderful place for photographers. The park is blessed with natural and serene surroundings which are perfect for sightseeing or picnics.

The park is mainly famous for deer but tourist can see different varieties of birds and animals like deer, panther, tortoise, crocodile, alligator, python, nilgai, turkey, peacock, colored parrots, pheasant, and ostrich etc. Along with this, there is very beautiful fish aquarium in this park, in which many different types of fish can be seen.

Apart from this, there is also a fun park and various types of adventure sports for children like Rope Climbing, Rope Bridge / Burma Bridge as well as some exercise equipment, which children enjoy a lot.


Buddha Temple

Buddha temple is a Tibetan Monastery, also known as Mindrolling Monastery. It was established in Clement Town, near ISBT, Dehradun in 1965 by Kochhen Rinpoche and few other monks for the protection and promotion of religious and cultural sightedness of Buddhism. Buddha temple was built as one of the four Tibetan schools and was named “Nyigma”. The other three schools are called Geluk, Kagyu and Sakya, which have great importance in Tibetan religion.

It is believed about the Buddha temple that it is the largest Buddhist monastery in Asia, every year thousands of tourists from all over the country and abroad come to visit here. In which Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava have prestige. While surrounded by greenery, it also have several shrine halls, Tibetan art and murals. The presence of 103 feet statue of Buddha located in the temple is very beautiful and the center of attraction for every tourist. If you are planning a trip to Dehradun then you must visit this beautiful place.  


Four Siddha

All four siddh – Laxman Siddh, Kaalu Siddh, Manak Siddh and Madhu Siddh, is situated in Dehradun city of Uttarakhand. Due to being in the same city, all four siddha (temple) can be visited in less time in a single day. It is believed that if one visits these four Siddhas without eating anything in a single day, then any wish of the devotees gets fulfilled.

Laxman Siddh Temple – Saint Swami Laxman Siddh had done penance here and this temple has been built in his name.This temple is situated about 12 km from Dehradun city and on the way of Dehradun-Rishikesh road. There is no public transport facility here. You can go here by taxi or by own vehicle. On Sunday, there is a crowd of devotees in this temple.

Kalu Siddh Temple – This temple is situated 7 km from Thano village near Baniawala. Located in the Thano Forest Range, this temple is dedicated to a saint named Kalu Siddh. Situated near Sheetal River, this place is ideal for bird lovers and trekking fans.

Manak Siddh Temple – This temple is situated in the Badowala area of Shimla Bypass. Here also the saint had done penance and this temple is named after him.

Madhu Siddh Temple – Located in Premnagar, this temple is situated in the middle of the forest. All these temples are small and secluded but due to their recognition, devotees reach here from faraway places.
